Presentation

The purpose of the conference is to gather scientists from different fields (statistics, time series, neurosciences, linguistics, medicine, biology) working on EEG (Electro-Encephalogram) with a strong emphasis on non-stationarity. What is EEG?

EEG measures electrical activity in the brain using electrodes placed on the scalp. It is widely used in neuroscience, clinical diagnosis (e.g., epilepsy, sleep disorders), and brain-computer interfaces (BCIs).

Why Statistics for EEG?

EEG signals are noisy, high-dimensional, and non-stationary. Statistical methods help:

  • Remove noise (artifacts from eye movements, muscle activity).

  • Detect patterns (event-related potentials, oscillations).

  • Compare groups (healthy vs. patients, different cognitive states).

  • Classify signals (e.g., for BCIs).

  • Segment signals according to the type of activities 

What are the challenges ?

  • Multiple Comparisons Problem for high dimensional problems (e.g., many electrodes, time points).

  • Non-stationarity (signal properties change over time).

  • High inter-subject variability.

  • Causality and connectivity beetween zones in the brain. 

 

What are the applications ? 

  •  Clinical Diagonis and Neurology ( for instance Epylepsy detection, Alzheimer/Parlkinson diagnosis, sleep studies)

  • Cognitive & behavioral neurosciences ( compare neural responses to stimuli ERP)

  • Brain-Computer Interfaces

  • Brain Connectivity & Network Analysis (Functional connectity versus disorder (Schizophrenia))

  • Developmental & Pediatric Studies (Autism diagnosis, Neonatal monitoring, impact of music on babies etc...)
